The Wolff Lecture will be given by Professor Lynda Nead on "Living Pictures on Dead Pages." The theme of the conference is to be interpreted in its widest possible meaning. Participants are invited to examine:

* textual imagery and representations of:

  • the foreign (constructions of identity and nationhood)
  • the past (the Middle Ages, the Restoration, the Enlightenment)
  • scientific exploits and theories (evolution, medicine, chemistry)
  • gender
 
* illustrations, cartoons, photographs, typography, layout, design, and graphics:
  • the impact of technical advances on the periodical
  • new manipulations of visual material
  • political uses of visual material
* bibliographical codes:
  • format
  • paper science
  • price and its effects
  • advertising
* developments abroad:
  • periodicals in Belgium, Holland, France, and other places

Submit your proposal (500 to 1000 words) and a short c. v. before 31 December 2003. Submissions are welcome by mail, fax, or email. Email submissions should be sent as part of the message, and not as attachments, please. Send to:
